Even our great organizer, Kathy Nelson, became so ill she couldn't make it. Several of us wanted to get to know her more and learn how she develops her beautiful modern quilts often shown in this blog.<br />
<br />
The facility, the Christian Reformed Conference Center in Grand Haven, MI ,was gorgeous, as was Friday's weather.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

About mid-afternoon several of us took a walk to the beach, just a short ways. The dune grasses are in fall mode as well as all the other flora.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L3-NxTV2nuQ/Vj_A7LB-njI/AAAAAAAAPfk/Y-J1Ei1Wv_k/s1600/IMG_2023.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L3-NxTV2nuQ/Vj_A7LB-njI/AAAAAAAAPfk/Y-J1Ei1Wv_k/s320/IMG_2023.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Later, another walk met up with a cloudy sunset. The peacefulness was wonderful!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Nature provides such a great inspiration for quilters, artists and humankind in general. Dune grass with the red berries and purple whatever.....simple beauty.<br />

The black squirrels, about 6 of them, were scampering around harvesting nuts on Saturday morning. I haven't seen so many black squirrels since days living on Lake Erie in Ontario.<br />

Roleen's tree skirt will be gorgeous when completed. This snowflake was almost her undoing though....just count of those pieces, some pieces only an 1"! It took most of a day to assemble one with three more to do - but very well worth it.</div>

Camera shy Roni holds her beach quilt for her daughter. The backing is a laminated fabric with a lightweight batting sandwiched in-between. The colors are so cheery. Since the laminate will be on the backside she wants to carefully tie the quilt together. </div>

My longtime buddy and travel partner came on Saturday. Robin is showing us her 2014 Sampler from the Attic Window. Rather than make a plain ordinary quilt, Robin has added prairie points and a banner type border. It's tablecloth to use with her Fiestaware dinnerware. The '30s fabric is perfect for the dishes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M-h5jScpkDU/Vj_A_Zw5qPI/AAAAAAAAPhY/mUkPotcJhng/s1600/IMG_2034.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M-h5jScpkDU/Vj_A_Zw5qPI/AAAAAAAAPhY/mUkPotcJhng/s320/IMG_2034.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Robin also finished a Row by Row to use as a table runner. Again, the snowman is the give away, it's from the Attic Window. Kudos to Robin for finishing two projects in one day!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Many of us can spend considerable dollars buying rolling totes for our machines. I was really taken with the Office Depot folding crate Robin uses to carry not only her machine but most of her tools, too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Adrienne had another scrappy project started but was dissatisfied with it, thus no pictures. :(.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A hearty thank you to Kathy Nelson for organizing this event for the last several months. Well, quilters, time to plan your calendars for the next retreat in April, 2016 at Lake Ann.</div>

Caroll D has lured me into Happy Scrappers, so I've become accustom to packing for a few hours of sewing - but two days....oh my. My 24" ruler is too long for any bag I as well as my portable ironing pad. Then to pack my sewing basket holding my cutter, pins, threads, etc. space is needed. While I'm only good for about 2 -21/2 hour sew sessions, my list of projects is not only long, its very thick and heavy. To eliminate several trips of unloading a large bag is needed. Ironically Costco has a freezer bag that can fit everything, however, it looks like small animals may have attacked the outside of it....it lays in the garage. Thus, the "I can do that" attitude began.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nS906yDbRWc/ViqVdtbovoI/AAAAAAAAPak/WkuxNBugFG0/s1600/rosie%2Bthe%2Briveter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nS906yDbRWc/ViqVdtbovoI/AAAAAAAAPak/WkuxNBugFG0/s1600/rosie%2Bthe%2Briveter.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With scrap pieces left over and not put away yet, I decided to make a retreat bag from my latest quilt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EfBUdECXkMI/ViqWxVGISWI/AAAAAAAAPb4/t-Xgm67r71U/s1600/IMG_1983.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EfBUdECXkMI/ViqWxVGISWI/AAAAAAAAPb4/t-Xgm67r71U/s640/IMG_1983.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
Here's where the Wisha, Wooda enters. I wanted the bag to be padded and stiff, to protect my long ruler. It's padded everywhere but only stiff on the sides, bottom and most of the back. The bottom, back and top flap are one piece. The fusible, stiff interfacing was limited, so I guessed at how to place it. The front contains just batting. Thus, I now wish it had stiffener as well. Oh well! It will still work for my needs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0f9lzOXpXp8/ViqWxoAuwEI/AAAAAAAAPcA/hfgd6yrlbak/s1600/IMG_1984.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0f9lzOXpXp8/ViqWxoAuwEI/AAAAAAAAPcA/hfgd6yrlbak/s640/IMG_1984.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
While the facings are thick, space is consumed by the thick seams, but the ruler can lay flat rather than on end, which I think will be okay. My ironing pad/cutting board makes a great bottom and allows for its carrying handle. With the plastic side down, waterproofing is there anyway.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EqofClF-9LE/ViqWw-Ae8WI/AAAAAAAAPbo/jLmz8Asids4/s1600/IMG_1982.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EqofClF-9LE/ViqWw-Ae8WI/AAAAAAAAPbo/jLmz8Asids4/s320/IMG_1982.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For some reason I got lost along the way and made 4 handles, when two sufficed. I opted to attach all four and tie a knot in the center of each pair. This way I can shoulder the bag or shorten it by a new knot for hand carrying. (Don't you just delight at how well I justify my mistakes, and I've never kissed the Blarney Stone). While making the handles I eventually recalled a trick learned 30+ years ago from Stetch n Sew. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For those persons unfamiliar with Stretch n Sew, it offered great methods of sewing knits during the 1960''s-late 1990's. Short cuts and learning how to size patterns to our imperfect bodies was wonderful! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PjOeshs-NR8/ViqWuAruxPI/AAAAAAAAPa8/sJvA8Ksha0c/s1600/IMG_1971.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PjOeshs-NR8/ViqWuAruxPI/AAAAAAAAPa8/sJvA8Ksha0c/s400/IMG_1971.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
When making handles, belts or ties, (1) get a string. ribbon or a piece of fabric thinner and longer than what's being made. Above, is a very long piece of twill tape ......<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dSKx-Zdfqb4/ViqWuhI7P-I/AAAAAAAAPbE/Msf1MYd-oYw/s1600/IMG_1975.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dSKx-Zdfqb4/ViqWuhI7P-I/AAAAAAAAPbE/Msf1MYd-oYw/s320/IMG_1975.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
(2) Prepare the handle to the method you prefer, with right sides together. I batted my handles so the outside fabric is on the bottom and batting on top.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e9DkLEmVxoA/ViqWvtAa4CI/AAAAAAAAPcI/UIrDETJn_1U/s1600/IMG_1978.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e9DkLEmVxoA/ViqWvtAa4CI/AAAAAAAAPcI/UIrDETJn_1U/s320/IMG_1978.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
(3) Once folded in half, run the twill tape the full length of the handle, with a small bit extending on one end and a very long piece at the other end. The twill tape runs along the fold.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rdWQudbDGaA/ViqWv1OtZXI/AAAAAAAAPbg/sQzCJr2sj6s/s1600/IMG_1979.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rdWQudbDGaA/ViqWv1OtZXI/AAAAAAAAPbg/sQzCJr2sj6s/s320/IMG_1979.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
It's hard to see, but I've sewn across the top of the handle, then down the long side.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C-Tg3ZemlB0/ViqWwOZCOiI/AAAAAAAAPbw/FrZP1BA6v6I/s1600/IMG_1980.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C-Tg3ZemlB0/ViqWwOZCOiI/AAAAAAAAPbw/FrZP1BA6v6I/s320/IMG_1980.JPG" width="320" /></a>\</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(4) When done sewing the long side you're ready to pull the right sides out by pulling the long end of the twill. It may take a few seconds to get it started but once you get the 'touch' the right sides show very quickly. when turned carefully snip the "puller" and work the corners to a point. It took Handle #1 about twenty minutes to pull through because laziness kept me from getting up and finding a puller.....I made and turned the other three handles in far less time than the first 20 minutes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While I wish I had waterproofed the outside, the bag will work fine next week. I'm so excited to be on the Big lake for a weekend. Remember? This is the weekend, for those of us staying over, on Lake Michigan! If this Michigan weather holds, it should be gorgeous for both sewing and walking the beach! If you're interested send a Messenger message via Facebook to Kathy Nelson. GRMQ has a Facebook page. <br />
<br />
Since the retreat is Halloween weekend, I have some Witches Brew and special paper plates just for the occasion. I'm making a travel bag for my mats and rulers, fashioned after a large Costco freezer bag. Will let you know how it turns out later this week.....<br />
<br />
The Stitched Studio Beehive meeting is Monday....this group is so much fun! The amazing combinations of fabrics is inspirational. Here's my block. Danielle allowed us to choose two fabrics from her stash (what a great way to use fabrics) and instructed us to add a solid or a metallic fabric. I have no metalic, so I stepped out on the pink. She is decorating her sewing room to be very girly! Had to be a pink, right?<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We share our photos on Instagram during the month. Instagram is another new technology app that is fun and so much easier than Facebook. Just post pictures, with or without hashtags* (specific identifiers). Look for us, Stitched Studio GR Modern Bee, on your tablet or smart phone! I follow NatGeo and the ISS (international space station)...amazing photos everyday.</div>

Really, too pretty and nice out to sew. So.......<br />

Monday was my autumn to do list!. Since I have told you enough on this quilt, but just had to show this newly washed quilt blowing in the fall winds. The tree colors all around were and still are perfect and the billowing quilt just made life seem more wonderful than it is! To continue the country and cozy feeling of quilting and all that goes with, I decided to do my local farm tour for fall produce.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5VkZARXfqqs/Vij13S2KqbI/AAAAAAAAPZU/QWlyKZXXQrY/s1600/fall%2Btour.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5VkZARXfqqs/Vij13S2KqbI/AAAAAAAAPZU/QWlyKZXXQrY/s640/fall%2Btour.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
While not in order (still learning this pic stitch app) here are my favorite local farms. Upper left is a Brechting. Their family farm store is on 6 Mile just west of Alpine. The bags of onions and potatoes are common there. They grow the longest carrots I have ever seen, all for a $1/bag! The peppers are common at Under the Pines, on Alpine just north of 7 Mile. They open in the early summer, have several stands in the markets around Kent County, but here is the Mothership! I have never seen so many variety of peppers representing several ethnic group favorites....Hungarian, Hispanic etc. While not a big pepper eater I LOVE the colors. Lower left is the sweetheart of all "roadside" stands, Bernie Klein. The Happy Apple needed new digs this year as their farm is in Ottawa County. Bernie has been running the family stand for years....along with daughter-in-law Tammy and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. The corn shown is from there. Her son owns the farm and had an empty piece of land and decided to try a late planting. The corn was wonderful....a summer treat in late October. The colors along Walker Road were magnificent! Oh! Brechtings have had their own brussel sprouts for sale. Unlike the Urban Market farmers, they won't sell their sprouts until after a frost....they're sweeter then! All three families: The Kleins' Breathings and Homrichs have been long standing leaders in Kent and Ottawa counties and also the farming community.<br />

My haul for trip, after about an hour, with the dogs of course, is shown. The pumpkins are now pies and the apples are baked into two Amish Pies and two loaves of apple bread. The apples were so large this year, an absolute delight to peel, that I have enough for two more pies! Tomorrow!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As this week has continued....a wild turkey from up the block sauntered down my way. A neighbor walking her dog rang my door bell for us all to watch glide over the yard and cross the street! He, the turnkey, was unfazed by my barking dogs and the cars! Thanksgiving is coming folks! Ever try wild turkey? So good....not tame like our traditional store bought kind. <br />
<br />
<br />
Also, as a follow up to my QAYG method, I found this video, I hate watching these things-but she's pretty good - and I like her method....she abuts the seams....<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji8BLS2rNHA&feature=em-subs_digest-g-vrecs">The Gourmet Quilter</a>! I have tried several methods, including the early method that keeps the back looking more traditional - one piece. My newest journey began watching my buddy Caroll D teach her class on QAYG ala <a href="http://www.thequiltingedge.com/p/tutorials.html">The Quilting Edge</a> technique. I just started with this method wanting only the sash joining process. I did it on this quilt:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bt6dmpltcIM/VhU5vUm2G6I/AAAAAAAAPSo/5WrEHIHqSLA/s1600/IMG_2254.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bt6dmpltcIM/VhU5vUm2G6I/AAAAAAAAPSo/5WrEHIHqSLA/s320/IMG_2254.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The other two tops from this BOM experimented with various sash widths. These quilts have added strips on the front and back by cutting batting strips to size and adding strips to cover.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WvE9aRkHkpY/VhU7BEAulOI/AAAAAAAAPS4/lN90Tg2EY4k/s1600/IMG_1907.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WvE9aRkHkpY/VhU7BEAulOI/AAAAAAAAPS4/lN90Tg2EY4k/s320/IMG_1907.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The top selection has narrow strips whereas this quilt has wide strips. The back below worked out the best as I limited my choice of fabrics and thread choices.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o5CHnBVS7Y4/VhU7BE_bqNI/AAAAAAAAPS0/J_zJeB4ywho/s1600/IMG_1908.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o5CHnBVS7Y4/VhU7BE_bqNI/AAAAAAAAPS0/J_zJeB4ywho/s320/IMG_1908.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<span id="goog_571107592"></span><span id="goog_571107593"></span><br />
<br />
Recently, I've had larger quilt tops to complete and really wanted to work the technique a bit. Larger batting strips are far easier to cut than 3/4" strips. It's a great way to use scraps but so annoying with 20 squares or more to connect. Traditional sashing of 2" would make the quilt larger than I wanted.<br />
<br />
<br />
On my Beehive quilt, below, I wanted to play more and experiment with several things: stitches, fabrics and techniques. The top's connectors, using the seam allowance as batting, are attached with no top stitching, similar to how sashing is normally attached. On the back, however, only one edge can be attached from the underside. One side must be topstitched. In the original or "traditional" method taught, this edge of the strip is hand stitched. The traditional method doesn't have the long line of stitching showing, but wasn't going to hand stitch all these blocks. I used my machine, hoping to disguise the bobbin stitching-now on the right side- with overall quilting. Well, nothing is quite that simple in my world. The quilting on the top, in this case, involved decorative stitches around each of the circles. What to do with the somewhat, mostly straight line, now showing....use matching thread. It provides a border, of sorts, to the seams.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Nsv-LEe5kbE/VhU8MCOdm4I/AAAAAAAAPTU/zBb0He-9A4Q/s1600/IMG_1825.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Nsv-LEe5kbE/VhU8MCOdm4I/AAAAAAAAPTU/zBb0He-9A4Q/s320/IMG_1825.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EPkJ7YguV1Q/VhU8MdNQHbI/AAAAAAAAPTY/yxgVMfUloA0/s1600/IMG_1851.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EPkJ7YguV1Q/VhU8MdNQHbI/AAAAAAAAPTY/yxgVMfUloA0/s320/IMG_1851.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
With the Circle Quilt narrow strips of 1 1/2' of a fabric were cut with both long edges pressed to the center. This strip was then placed over the space created by the topside's sashing strip. It worked ok, but the iron's steam was a bit too hot on the finger tips. Thus, the method I used below was devised.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yVZUesEbuN8/VhU7v4HLcyI/AAAAAAAAPTI/klS85eW8qNg/s1600/IMG_1902.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yVZUesEbuN8/VhU7v4HLcyI/AAAAAAAAPTI/klS85eW8qNg/s320/IMG_1902.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Unlike the other quilts, this top had a very defined pattern and did not require any top sashing. Yeah! I quilted as I goed, QAYG, all three layers, in blocks of four. Each four patch was about 18". The quilting required more planning than I usually do. All in all the machine quilting was no more than one long row of four four patch blocks. The large squares I practiced free motion with my new machine - not so good, but the thread is hidden (learned that lesson finally). Now for the backside.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RGjpkDhEJkw/VhU_1daeSvI/AAAAAAAAPVo/xEEqShZUEPo/s1600/IMG_1882.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RGjpkDhEJkw/VhU_1daeSvI/AAAAAAAAPVo/xEEqShZUEPo/s320/IMG_1882.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I alternated four fabrics behind the front's four patches. The connecting sashing matched one of the backings, as shown in these two pictures.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZrmMUXHft58/VhU_1sYlh0I/AAAAAAAAPVs/WieatwmFEs8/s1600/IMG_1883.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZrmMUXHft58/VhU_1sYlh0I/AAAAAAAAPVs/WieatwmFEs8/s320/IMG_1883.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Since I used the seams allowances, 1/2" (two 1/4') as my batting, I just needed to add a strip. The picture below shows the strip topstitched.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tvUssx2U5UE/VhU_ysmyK4I/AAAAAAAAPUg/eWl2hkzFEiI/s1600/IMG_1872.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tvUssx2U5UE/VhU_ysmyK4I/AAAAAAAAPUg/eWl2hkzFEiI/s320/IMG_1872.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
While the strip may not be as smooth as other methods, I enjoyed this method, it met my emotional standard.<br />
<br />
Here's how I made the strips:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-feI9oKp8_II/VhU_zLV9S6I/AAAAAAAAPU4/Wfi_pRQ9t10/s1600/IMG_1873.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-feI9oKp8_II/VhU_zLV9S6I/AAAAAAAAPU4/Wfi_pRQ9t10/s320/IMG_1873.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Steam press the seams open and make them flat as possible.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-juIKrQARIhY/VhU_z6BU9AI/AAAAAAAAPVI/URnPnUSMcrI/s1600/IMG_1875.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-juIKrQARIhY/VhU_z6BU9AI/AAAAAAAAPVI/URnPnUSMcrI/s320/IMG_1875.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Cut a strip long enough for your block 1 1/2' wide. Since I'm not as an exact sewer that I dream I am, I strive to make things to work. Sew the strip, wrong sides together with 1/4" seam allowance. While opening the tube by pressing the center, align it to the strip's edge as shown above.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9AMXVxwt_mg/VhU_0L04sSI/AAAAAAAAPVQ/TMEwEIJ3uF0/s1600/IMG_1876.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9AMXVxwt_mg/VhU_0L04sSI/AAAAAAAAPVQ/TMEwEIJ3uF0/s320/IMG_1876.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
With your flattened tube strip, trim the allowance down to 1/8". At first I left the 1/4" and threads from the edge peeked out . Yuck. The trimming moves the raw edge away from the topstitching edge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jAy2xy-5Zwc/VhU_zmWT0RI/AAAAAAAAPVE/jCtILyHTOVU/s1600/IMG_1874.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jAy2xy-5Zwc/VhU_zmWT0RI/AAAAAAAAPVE/jCtILyHTOVU/s320/IMG_1874.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
With the right side of the strip up, lay it on top of your flatten seam allowance and top stitch close to each edge, to the end. (This strip is perpendicular to the seam it will cover for illustration purposes only.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Y7hqZnQI8cg/VhU_yck2N9I/AAAAAAAAPUw/vlprpe_pGvk/s1600/IMG_1871.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Y7hqZnQI8cg/VhU_yck2N9I/AAAAAAAAPUw/vlprpe_pGvk/s320/IMG_1871.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's a completed block also showing, look closely, that because of the pattern on the topside, this vertical stitching won't really conflict. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Lessons learned:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<ul>
<li>QAYG will make the topside blocks smaller. I chose to space the vertical quilting the width of my walking foot. This pattern has considerable blank space and required something. The angle of the patterns also led to straight line quilting. The heavily quilted blocks differed in size with the less quilted blocks.</li>
<li>If to do over? Space vertical lines further apart....this quilt is really heavy!</li>
<li>Limit thread color choices. On the Circle Quilt I was changing thread colors endlessly since I was rotating three fabrics and the top had several background colors, too. I really think I wore out a seam ripper on that quilt. On the Star quilt I used either white or a lime green. Even then when applying strips, make sure the bobbin thread matches the top background fabrics....</li>
<li>The smaller quilts, like the very top examples, work better for some one like me who reaches the need to be done....more than anything. </li>
</ul>
<div>
I hope this experience of experimenting helps you try QAYG in some method. Just Google QAYG and you'll have severals tutorials from which to choose.<br />
<br />
In case you're looking for a fast quilt, this pattern by Amy Gibson of Hickory Dickory Dock, has it now on her <a href="http://www.stitcherydickorydock.com/triple-barnstar-pattern-is-here/">website</a>. I purchased it as a Craftsy.com kit. In case you're wondering, I have a good amount of fabric left over. Not enough to make several other quilts, but enough that I think I'll go back to The Quilting Edge and try that method.....great for scraps of all sizes. The Craftsy.com kit was generous, but not too generous....just right.</div>

For over six years now a group of us, all strangers in the beginning, started quilting together making Civil War Commemorative Quilts. While I'e never been a lover of the CW quilts or fabrics, I did like the block of the month offered way back when. My techniques and knowledge increased tremendously. All of them told a story each month, highlighting the feats of women. However, many huge quilt BOMs later, we still meet, all friends and quilting buddies. I've shown Pauline's quilts in the past, but she just keeps on kicking our quilts for her family.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The top and lower picture is a quilt she design and made for her new grandson, 5 months old! She found the logos and hand traced them. Much of her appliqué is hand done.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here Pauline is showing her use of 30"s material....just using it up! This quilt might also be from the 1930's in real time. She's been trying to fix and finish a top she was given.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_mfehW6X-mI/VhUxT7uCdMI/AAAAAAAAPSI/SA2tQ51NjwA/s1600/IMG_1811.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_mfehW6X-mI/VhUxT7uCdMI/AAAAAAAAPSI/SA2tQ51NjwA/s320/IMG_1811.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
In addition to Pauline, Linda L joined other new friends on the third Wednesday, and did a BOM led by Sue and Marilyn ( 3rd Wednesday veterans) called El's Kitchen. Since I sort of wished I had done this BOM I am doing a new one starting in October. Sue and Marilyn are again leading a class on Vintage Farm Quilts. I chose the 30's fabric as it is brighter than the alternate. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9okPXC-SX-c/VhUxUFaSPnI/AAAAAAAAPSM/JLADldLePw8/s1600/IMG_1813.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9okPXC-SX-c/VhUxUFaSPnI/AAAAAAAAPSM/JLADldLePw8/s320/IMG_1813.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
How are all these selections modern, you ask? Maybe not what you may think, but promoting what we all do is important for all of us to succeed, no matter our preference....it's that Liberal Arts education I had popping up agin.... I'm hoping Pauline will have her family quilt, with at least 20 or more old photos on the top completed!<br />
<br />
Do any of you have a pattern for the Japanese apron shown <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=japanese+wrap+aprons&client=safari&rls=en&tbm=isch&imgil=sqU5krlXjpK98M%253A%253BqVe55yFghkC2kM%253Bhttps%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.pinterest.com%25252Fexplore%25252Fapron-dress%25252F&source=iu&pf=m&fir=sqU5krlXjpK98M%253A%252CqVe55yFghkC2kM%252C_&biw=1440&bih=838&usg=__RmvCm_VkCBshonIXmJ1TIvHzLFk%3D&ved=0CEgQyjdqFQoTCMeX6NTRsMgCFUSKDQodrjAFLQ&ei=LDUVVsfRDcSUNq7hlOgC#imgrc=sqU5krlXjpK98M%3A&usg=__RmvCm_VkCBshonIXmJ1TIvHzLFk%3D">here?</a> I would love to make one as it doesn't require ties or snaps, just over the head....<br />

For those not familiar, Art Prize, allows artists of all types to showcase their creations around Grand Rapids. This year over 1500 entries in five categories covered our downtown, near downtown area plus the beautiful Meijer Gardens and the newly added Granville Avenue area. I think, overall, approximately $250,000 or more in prize money is awarded to the top vote getting artist. Juried artists receive a generous cash award as well. At Tuesday's GRMQ meeting we had our own art showing of the quilts made by members and guests.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

Marcia, above and below, shows first her block luck. I think she won these at our meeting a couple months ago. She mixed them up as they were a bit boring. I love how she added the horizontal brown bars. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Many of us have seen quilts with all this feathering and coloring. We also were very surprised that Marcia colored the feathers! I think we need a special Saturday afternoon class teaching us this technique. Coloring is now the rage for adults....books, special crayons and paints!</div>

The above quilt was purchased last June or July for a sew along with the designer Amy Gibson in September, 2014 -offered on Craftsy. I missed the sew along as I was in Russia most of September...so it took another year for completion. I did my version of QAYG on the reverse side.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Becky showed us this quilt as a top several months ago - her buddy Catherine brought it to the meeting as it was fresh off the long arm. It is so beautiful. See Catherine's work below.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I've seen many of Catherine's other beautiful quilts as she, too, is a regular at Attic Window. Here is an absolute beautiful example of the swirling lonestar that Vicky Stark teaches at the Attic Window. </div>

In case you never had a formal lesson on squaring fabric or need a refresher the Craftsy blog has this <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2015/10/how-to-square-up-fabric/">tutorial</a>. I've been taught that the manufacturer's fold or permanent fold was okay to measure from, however this lesson says otherwise.....watch.</div>

I walked in about 10 minutes before the start time and had to shift some beautiful quilts to sit! How great it is!<br />

I think at one point there were 25 quilters waiting for the meeting to begin. It was a very good meeting as well. It is amazing the talent we have among our ranks. </div>

Jan offered to present a quick lesson on threads. Oh, boy! It's no wonder why the quilts she has shown at previous meetings look so beautiful. While looking so professorial at the podium, she took over like the pro she is. Her employment with Superior Threads equipped her and anyone she coaches with so much knowledge. With her various samples from Connecting Threads, Coats & Clark, Aurifil and Sulky she led us through the thread selection maze. Quick notes include:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Staple: at the length of the fiber being twisted. Longer the better for strength.</li>
<li>Egyptian cotton: not necessarily grown there, but seeds from the plant called Egyptian cotton produced the fiber;</li>
<li>All of us who have inherited thread from our mothers and grandmothers know this but can't dispose of them - thread has a shelf life. Old thread - throw it out. I do use it sometimes when sandwiching a quilt...if it doesn't continually break while basting.</li>
<li>Rayon thread is not colorfast and most likely melts under a hot iron typically used in quilting;</li>
<li>Mercerized thread will not shrink - a good thing.</li>
<li>The biggie: the numbers on the spool. Visualize weighing a pound of thread- the more thread needed for 16 ounces the thinner the thread (high number); likewise the thicker thread has a lower number since it takes less to make a pound.</li>
<li>When machine quilting, a sewer can use any type of thread and the top and bobbin threads do NOT have to match weights. Jan prefers to quilt with polyester thread because she likes its appearance.</li>
<li>The main criteria for selecting a thread to use should be the impact on your sewing machine. The lower number threads are thicker (takes less to make a pound) will lint more than the thinner threads(higher number). The lint accumulating in the bobbin area can be very difficult on your machines performance. </li>
<li>Metallic threads: must, must, MUST change the tension on your machine to 0 or less than 1 and despite what the store clerk may tell you, a number 90 needle should be used.</li>
<li>Needles: while the new titanium COATed needles cost a bit more they lasts longer - the finish protects the needles from chips. </li>
<li>The groove on the needle faces you....so the thread has a path to follow (likewise, the flat side to the rear);</li>
<li>Jan also indicated that thread should feed into the machines' tension disc from a vertical position and not a horizontal angle. Her visual used a roll of ribbon unwinding. Try it at home at both angles - you'll see that the horizontal angle twists the thread, while the upright angle do not. </li>

However, I'm going to repeat a"conversation" I posted several weeks ago on use of the FriXon pens. At a meeting I showed the shadowing that can occur using these pens on the right side of the fabric. While I do use the pens, now only on the wrong side, several persons defended their use since their experiences hadn't soured. Please read this posting, as Jenny K Lyon talked with the manufacturer of of the pens. <a href="http://quiltskipper.com/2015/08/13/frixion-pens-all-you-need-to-know/">All You Need to Know on FriXon pens</a>. The new news on this issue for me was that washing doesn't remove the gel. She too, expresses some frustration over this issue. Many of you may think similar to me that your quilts are not heirloom or quality for a show. But as women, mostly, don't discount the value of your time and efforts (we do it far too often). Well, well, that's my rant for today. Keep up the good work and deeds that all quilters do!</div>

Our monthly GR Modern Quilters meeting is Tuesday, October 6th. Of course, we meet at Kuyper College on the East Beltline between Three and Four Mile Roads. 7pm<br />
<br />
I just received an email from Kathy Nelson who is planning our retreat in October. Since there have been a few cancellations, if you're interested in attending just go to the Facebook page for Grand Rapids Modern Quilters. You'll never get a better price for a lakefront stay on Lake Michigan unless you own a property or a rich grandma! <br />
<br />
Last Friday turned into an absolutely beautiful day. After years of pining to be able to pack up and just go to the beach.....I did, with dogs in tow! Enjoy!<br />

Kat was our Queen Bee this month. She chose the snowball pattern. However, since her family loves science, the top three snowballs were to be scrappy in teals and the bottom balls - scrappy in grays. Her plan is to intertwine the blocks, 16", to represent the DNA molecule. Here are some of the blocks she received.<br />

I was Queen several months ago. I had an inspiration delay as I changed the pattern a bit. All in all, it turned out very cool. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I played with decorative stitching around each block. I also utilized another QAYG method.<br />

It's hard to settle down and sew when the temps are in the mid 70's, dry and clear skies. The Fallsburg Art Festival, sponsored by the Lowell Arts Council was held a week ago. While the morning started cool, it was perfect for walking among the art booths. <br />
<br />
The quilt shown is the raffle quilt for the art council.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The stitching was just gorgeous. <br />

While many beautiful works or art were shown at the festival I found this artist, Bechler Pottery,who specialized in ceramics and tiles. The first two shown below are my favorites. I would love the top ceramic greet my guests by hanging outside in my covered front porch area. I identify with this person....he said that his best customers are counselors....not high school kind but mental health types. Oh my!</div>

It's always interesting to watch people and who have achieve a certain level of fame and how the person handles it. I had the privilege to meet and have dinner with such a leader in a quilting movement. I left the dinner thinking what a diva she is....granted she's done far more than I ever would do,but what an ego! While her designs and products are leaders in the craft, she neglected to put on her game face. Well, Jenny Doan, the face of <a href="https://www.missouriquiltco.com/">Missosuri Star Quilt Company</a> is quite the opposite. You just want to hug her and bring her home to dinner, meet the family and pet the dogs. The "game face" is an important belief of Jenny's. They have several young people employed at a their now mega enterprise. She teaches them no matter what is happening in your personal life, put on a game face not only for our customers, but just do it anyway. What a great philosophy and life lesson for all of us!<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.lighthousequilters.org/">Lighthouse Quilt Guild</a> in Grand Haven, MI sponsored Ms. Doan's visit to West Michigan....they hit a grand slam as far as I'm concerned. While I opted to not take classes either of the two days offered, I'd seriously reconsider classes again if Ms Doan were to visit anywhere nearby. She started her presentation to the nearly filled auditorium of Lakeside Middle School (quite large for a middle school) at 6:30 after about 10 minutes of giving away gifts. Jeny's formal presentation stopped at 9 pm. Then she took questions from the audience for at least another 15 minutes. If that wasn't enough she promised to stay on stage to answer questions personally and sign books "until the last person leaves". <br />
<br />
Oh my goodness! What a story of a company forming and GROWING from the ashes of the Great Recession to being named the Best Small Business in America. She referred to the company, started by her children, to keep mom and dad out of their basements - since they had been literally wiped out in 2008! Six of her seven children own and operate the Missouri Star Quilt Company.....all from a simple comment from her techie son: Hey Mom, you should do a tutorial on quilting for You Tube" seven years ago. Apparently, You Tube is about 8 years old! Below, I've referenced a couple articles explaining the company's story<br />
<br />
Jenny Doan's You Tube tutorials are absolutely the best! From the tutorials came The Block, their quarterly magazine (sans subscription cards flying out and advertisements), then came the connection that any quilt can be made form pre-cuts, to having five quilt stores in western Missouri with five more opening soon and five more in design! <br />
<br />
After relaying much of this amazing story she and Ron-a Vana, her husband, demonstrated her quilts, all from pre-cuts and how their templates are incorporated. For those of you considering a either a road trip west or even to Kansas City (a world series will be playing soon at the Kaufman), their home is about 45 minutes north. <br />
<br />
A hearty thank you goes to <a href="http://www.aroundtheblockquiltshop.com/">Around the Block Quilt store in Portland, MI</a> for bringing MSQ books, templates and other goodies to the presentation. Neighbor Judy and I arrived at the school around 5 p.m. and the cash register was already cha-chinging. Those ladies definitely had lighter boxes to take back to Portland. <br />
<br />
Oh, in case you're wondering about more take away info from the presentation:<br />
a) trust the fabric combinations in the pre-cuts, don't pull out fabrics you may not like<br />
b) all of MSQ templates, unlike other company templates, are designed especially for pre-cuts.<br />
c) check their website for the combos on pre-cuts and how many make the various size quilts....<br />
<br />
Jenny's presentation was just too packed with information to relate all of it....you just had to be there.....<br />
<br />
Oh, and after all the laughter - she knows quilting and quilters and of course family dynamics, she had us almost in tears at the end. When her first video went out she thought her audience would be working women. Little did she know the impact she had on persons confined to their home for medical or mental health issues. She turned that compliment she received unto us...and all at the good we inadvertently do. She says there is no better and far reaching hobby or career than quilting.....golf doesn't do that, now does it....she told us. Our quilts and the pillowcases touch hearts far and wide. She too, was almost in tears!<br />

Last week when I receive an email from my friend Caroll about going to the Stitched Studio side walk sale on Monday morning I was shocked! Of course I'd help her maneuver on the east side of the river to East Paris, south of Cascade! Well. lo and behold we were first.....! Oh what fun we had. Some of SS fabric was 70%, yes 70% off. Well, those fabrics we bought a yard of more! The remaining and most of the fabrics were 50% off, but what a selection. We saw our new friend, Polly, who is one of our Beehive Block of the Month friends. Soon we had a crowd and how Michele and Kat kept track of who had which fabric was amazing. The sale goes until tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept 15....oops....quarterly tax day. Do you think Uncle would mind if my payment came in old fabric? <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YU6ccA2Oojk/Vfchy6u8j5I/AAAAAAAAPAg/9n1zCx7COiw/s1600/IMG_1790.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YU6ccA2Oojk/Vfchy6u8j5I/AAAAAAAAPAg/9n1zCx7COiw/s320/IMG_1790.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I have been drooling over these Moda solids with texture. The decision on which to purchase and how to use them pushed me away as I never had a plan. Still don't have a plan but they are so gorgeous. We were all amazed that they had been in the store at it's grand opening! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PIo5ux0B5pU/VfchynC45OI/AAAAAAAAPAc/a-OpSawQ0NM/s1600/IMG_1791.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PIo5ux0B5pU/VfchynC45OI/AAAAAAAAPAc/a-OpSawQ0NM/s320/IMG_1791.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
These three fabrics are begging to be made into a satchel similar what I had made in 2014. Caroll keeps telling me a woman can never have too many bags.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U9ujnK6Gi_U/VfchykenQPI/AAAAAAAAPAk/b-96ncDEyng/s1600/IMG_1792.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U9ujnK6Gi_U/VfchykenQPI/AAAAAAAAPAk/b-96ncDEyng/s320/IMG_1792.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Last year Stitched Studio had a Marushka doll fabric that was going to be my flight bag for Russia. While the trip was great, the bag never happened. The above fabric make a great lining, even though it's not a Russian theme, but playful like the dolls.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Michele indicated that this remnant, a good filler fabric, is organic. <br />
<br />
The staff had just finished the quilt top for the appliqué block of the month, very, very modern. Check out their website for other cool BOM's and the new fabrics that helped out by emptying the shelves. Carolyn Friedlander's block of the month is <a href="http://www.stitched-studio.com/module/class.htm?classId=95139">here</a>. The screen shot below is only one of the cool blocks to be completed.<br />

Vicky S teaches at The Attic Window. This link will explain why I become over committed on my swirling lone star quilt. ( I couldn't copy the pictures from Caroll's blog).<br />
<br />

<a href="http://westmichquilter.blogspot.com/2014/12/a-real-one-block-wonder.html">http://westmichquilter.blogspot.com/2014/12/a-real-one-block-wonder.html</a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Vicky does amazing work. Did you see the peacock and her holding her swirling star?!<br />
<br />
<br />
Anyway, I was unable to attend the full sessions of Happy Scrappers, where she taught several of us the technique needed. While I kind of knew I was in over my head, I opted to push myself. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tIos85Us9ew/VehVYKDszHI/AAAAAAAAO-s/0x_pPd3YbVE/s1600/IMG_2801.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tIos85Us9ew/VehVYKDszHI/AAAAAAAAO-s/0x_pPd3YbVE/s320/IMG_2801.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tIos85Us9ew/VehVYKDszHI/AAAAAAAAO-s/0x_pPd3YbVE/s1600/IMG_2801.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tIos85Us9ew/VehVYKDszHI/AAAAAAAAO-s/0x_pPd3YbVE/s320/IMG_2801.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The above came after several pains taking decisions and a required preparation time.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-USjzVunBSkA/VehhiqNCP8I/AAAAAAAAO_Q/EN_5Rma1yrA/s1600/IMG_1756.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-USjzVunBSkA/VehhiqNCP8I/AAAAAAAAO_Q/EN_5Rma1yrA/s320/IMG_1756.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The strips all resulted from choosing eight different fabrics offering good contrast. While I could have purchased better fabric, I had accumulated all this fabric from several fabric hunting adventures while visiting the Bahamas several times over the last 28 years or so.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VtC9V5xouZ4/VehhiiW3e7I/AAAAAAAAO_M/c9gSK2NhTe0/s1600/IMG_1757.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VtC9V5xouZ4/VehhiiW3e7I/AAAAAAAAO_M/c9gSK2NhTe0/s320/IMG_1757.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
These pictures resulted when I cleaned up the stash for this project. The partial strips are leftovers from the main points. For some reason, I made two sets of main points. Since I mis-cut something, one of the points actually saved me a lot of work. The colors are put together in strips, numbered 1-8. Vicky provided all the templates and instructions all of which were explained on wonderfully clear story boards. See my mock ups below. The colors had to contrast but also flow....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TXV0aN0K-5M/VehhjhvBzyI/AAAAAAAAO_k/xB0PPni903s/s1600/IMG_1759.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TXV0aN0K-5M/VehhjhvBzyI/AAAAAAAAO_k/xB0PPni903s/s320/IMG_1759.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nGYKfAK_gIA/VehhijNsd1I/AAAAAAAAO_Y/VGQtyti5VN0/s1600/IMG_1758.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nGYKfAK_gIA/VehhijNsd1I/AAAAAAAAO_Y/VGQtyti5VN0/s320/IMG_1758.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The New York Beauties paper piecing was also internal to the pattern taught.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8cs69UbTt2Q/VehhkV5v3fI/AAAAAAAAO_0/erUnarnvffE/s1600/IMG_1762.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8cs69UbTt2Q/VehhkV5v3fI/AAAAAAAAO_0/erUnarnvffE/s320/IMG_1762.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
A knife from subway was found in the fabric box....many salads from Subway provided sustenance.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qMmVN1tewxI/VehhkINEWZI/AAAAAAAAO_w/8djWdvrhiLc/s1600/IMG_1761.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qMmVN1tewxI/VehhkINEWZI/AAAAAAAAO_w/8djWdvrhiLc/s320/IMG_1761.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Well, after making the strips, after all the mock ups, sewing them together, all seams open, the star must be measured ACCURATELY. One little slip up can grow sooooooo big. Above is the measuring tool created to properly measure and place the completed NYB.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wWsD7CorIOA/VehhjzklyfI/AAAAAAAAO_s/Y9cPTs6ei-U/s1600/IMG_1760.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wWsD7CorIOA/VehhjzklyfI/AAAAAAAAO_s/Y9cPTs6ei-U/s320/IMG_1760.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
oops! found a pattern piece that was missing from its envelope! yeah!<br />
<br />
I'm satisfied with my my project but more satisfied that it's off my list. It will make a nice summer time table cloth for either my kitchen bistro table or the patio table outside.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Heard a great reason for not feeling guilty about have too much fabric: Stamp collectors collect stamps, but never use them! Think of all those coin collectors! Bye for now.....<br />
<br />
Happy End of Summer and beginning of fall......<br />

While defining a concept that defies defining seems unnecessary to me, many members appreciated the time for discussing the concept. My first love and first major in college was history, thus for me,modern can be assigned to any time period. Having been an accountant for my 25+ career years, I rather enjoy not having rules, which modern anything embraces! in the end, quilters will create what they like no matter the popular experts decree.<br />
<br />
Moving on, enjoy the pictures from the meeting<br />

Kelly shows us her quilt top done in "circular" fashion.(above) Many of the fabrics are souvenirs from a recent trip to Hawaii. Below, our guild's secretary reveals her block exchange. Her criteria were to incorporate solids in grays and yellows. Of course everyone but one quilter heard the rules....except for Becky???? The lone ranger block worked great though, it's the upper right with a yellow print.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oEFo_dytO7Q/VehVVkx6bXI/AAAAAAAAO9k/1__4X3Q9Gtk/s1600/IMG_1765.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oEFo_dytO7Q/VehVVkx6bXI/AAAAAAAAO9k/1__4X3Q9Gtk/s320/IMG_1765.JPG" width="240" /></a><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ambitious Marcia had her blocks from a previous month's exchange completed. It looks great! Notice how she worked in the leftover HST's in the middle to break the monotony. Marcia doesn't sit idle for very long, she stitched a binding onto another quilt during our meeting. I'd enjoy attending the symphony more if I could sew while listening!</div>

Jan shows us the most exquisite quilts each month. Needless to say when she showed the completed quilt, below, no controversy arose whether this example was modern. While circular motifs are integral to the quilting most of her quilting detail was done by walking foot! Some members commented that only certain types of quilting designs could be considered modern. The leafy motifs could be considered more traditional. What do you think?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T8lV8uclenU/VehVWK6auCI/AAAAAAAAO9w/WDQ--jGEWvc/s1600/IMG_1767.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T8lV8uclenU/VehVWK6auCI/AAAAAAAAO9w/WDQ--jGEWvc/s320/IMG_1767.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Another modern example from Jan. Color usage entered the "What is Modern" discussion. Jan showed us this quilt of more traditional colors done modern.....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The close-up above shows an example of stitches Ginger used on her small wall hanging. Making use of the decorative stitches sewing machines have, even a basic zig zag, can elevate the quilting to a more interesting view. Interestingly, Ginger paper pieced the stars for this example using fabrics purchased from Bill Kerr's site....modern fabrics? Of course, opinions were expressed for both sides of yes and no!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nx6waZO2xaQ/VehVXCMJVWI/AAAAAAAAO-E/8uA76lUHOP0/s1600/IMG_1771.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nx6waZO2xaQ/VehVXCMJVWI/AAAAAAAAO-E/8uA76lUHOP0/s320/IMG_1771.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Kathy showed us her new quilt top. Kathy really likes doing modern with irregular shapes worked into the top.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NqfxNOJ00y8/VehVXY3On2I/AAAAAAAAO-I/Vzhsp3yJyws/s1600/IMG_1774.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NqfxNOJ00y8/VehVXY3On2I/AAAAAAAAO-I/Vzhsp3yJyws/s320/IMG_1774.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Lindsey showed us her example of modern, too. She loves to make pillow covers with exposed zippers. Her pillow covers mimic the Marushka dolls of Russia, take one off and another appears, several times.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I showed my swirling lone star table cloth. This project was more involved than I should have committed myself. A later blog will explain. I was SO GLAD to move this project off the to-do list.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V1hB-zJArP8/VehVYCw8p6I/AAAAAAAAO-g/vxDHmd4zuZM/s1600/IMG_2802.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V1hB-zJArP8/VehVYCw8p6I/AAAAAAAAO-g/vxDHmd4zuZM/s320/IMG_2802.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The fabric is from the Bahamas collected from several trips from many years....over 25! I needed 8 colors, so I started cutting old dresses and shirts I had made.....<br />
<br />
If you're looking for a fun road trip, consider Three Rivers, Michigan! Why? The blogger of <a href="http://www.13spools.com/2015/09/catching-up-2.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheCuteLife+%2813+Spools%29">13 Spools</a> has some of her quilts on display at the Carnegie Art Museum there. Perhaps another time, as Chris has so much sewing and quilting knowledge to share. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On another note if you're interested getting 60+ free 12 1/2" blocks start with <a href="http://quiltingjetgirl.com/">the Quilting Girl blog</a>. A four day blog hop is underway, today is day 2. Each day for four days 15 bloggers will present not only their design but the free instructions for making the block. Quilt instructions may also be presented. Paper piecing, appliqué and various cut and sew blocks are offered, some a bit more traditional and many more modern. Enjoy!</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e5GllHygx0A/VdEFtuwBz2I/AAAAAAAAO6s/lryeKQcp2rI/s1600/IMG_1675.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e5GllHygx0A/VdEFtuwBz2I/AAAAAAAAO6s/lryeKQcp2rI/s320/IMG_1675.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Chris implemented texture in her design. The texture of the thread spools and her applique technique for the fish bowl are very interesting and a bit tricky. A special field trip has been arranged for GRMQ members at the Attic Window.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The first two tri's grew to those shown below. I was lost after the first two, above, but still optimistic.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SvVdcvj4fIU/VdDohQlG3pI/AAAAAAAAO5Q/9PewYbHqo9E/s1600/IMG_0678.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SvVdcvj4fIU/VdDohQlG3pI/AAAAAAAAO5Q/9PewYbHqo9E/s320/IMG_0678.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
All sorts of sizes needed to be made so that a square could be make.....right! After many hours of struggling with scrappy fabrics and sizes, I concede! Free equilateral triangles for those who want them.....<br />
For those of you who may wish to tackle this project look up Kitchen Table Quilting for the <a href="http://www.kitchentablequilting.com/2012/10/puzzled-triangles-tutorial.html">puzzled triangles tutorial</a><br />
<br />
At Happy Scrappers last week I decided to try some paper piece projects I found browsing blogs.<br />
<br />
Batiks were my scraps of choice. The pattern is called Tequila Sunrise. Piece One is the circle, sun, and an itty bitty piece. The piece size gradually and slowly increase in size. Playing with the sun and its contrast for the sunrise was fun.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rG_FNs11PMo/VdDofTrHFgI/AAAAAAAAO5I/X7-D38dzmT8/s1600/IMG_0672.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rG_FNs11PMo/VdDofTrHFgI/AAAAAAAAO5I/X7-D38dzmT8/s320/IMG_0672.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The top left "sun" was supposed to be a moonless night! Top right, a night with a full moon. The lower left has a red sun with the lower right with an orange sun but not enough contrast perhaps, as in the moonless example. Oh well, lesson learned for this exercise. The tutorial for the 6" blocks and quilt is found at <a href="http://piecebynumber.com/tequila-sunrise-free-quilt-block-pattern/">Piecebynumber.com</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fresh Lemons has a star paper pieced project entitled Solstice Stars Series. Star of Mystery is the name of the block shown below. The floral was my main fabric and added the pink, orange and teal as I went along. While doing the outer pieces the pattern fell into place for me. All in all, the choices are growing on me, but would never want too many of these blocks in a quilt. After completion I found I enjoyed the block, following the instructions for the corners for "squaring" will keep you from another seam ripper bonding experience. This block and the rest of the series can be found at Freshlemons.com and this particular block at this <a href="http://www.freshlemonsquilts.com/?s=STAR+OF+MYSTERY">address</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fWCcCXVCQ9I/VdDxXhLY3-I/AAAAAAAAO50/uk-SXPyYhRs/s1600/IMG_0679.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fWCcCXVCQ9I/VdDxXhLY3-I/AAAAAAAAO50/uk-SXPyYhRs/s320/IMG_0679.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dsy5bD96MjE/VdEACo1B6XI/AAAAAAAAO6U/X7Lc9AP9M8I/s1600/IMG_0681.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dsy5bD96MjE/VdEACo1B6XI/AAAAAAAAO6U/X7Lc9AP9M8I/s320/IMG_0681.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Stitch By Number also has this block. With this block I neglected to check my printer as to print to scale. Consequently, the size of this block is odd: 5 3/8! It will have to be sent to the log cabin workshop to have an unfinished size of 6 1/2. It's called Big Sister, Little Sister. Use the same website if interested in this block.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lastly, I started this project with fervor. I needed space in my cabinet for the new fabrics purchased at AQS. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ax7DqSVbIS4/VdEC5hU-7ZI/AAAAAAAAO6g/q2tQwGI0paU/s1600/IMG_0680.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ax7DqSVbIS4/VdEC5hU-7ZI/AAAAAAAAO6g/q2tQwGI0paU/s320/IMG_0680.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It will measure 34" square when complete. Both of these fabrics are left overs from other quilts. Along the way I'll implement the QAYG method I've been using from Quilter's Edge. <a href="http://aquilterstable.blogspot.com/2014/10/spiraled-underground.html">Spirled</a> and the accompanying tutorial on big batch HST's is found <a href="http://aquilterstable.blogspot.com/2014/10/spiraled-underground.html">here</a>. </div>

Of course I wasn't going to go to the Grand Rapids version of AQS. However, I was still curious what could be new. Overall it was a good show but not as exciting as the first couple years. Of course last year knowing the sister of the featured artist led to an invitation of a most interesting dinner. Remember the quilt of First Peoples of Canada? In the conclusion the artist and her assistants determined that Canada has at least one person from each nation in the world. An artist or special methodology was not highlighted this year. Even the Egyptian appliqué was shown via DVD. While the persons I've spoken with agree, it seemed like more vendors were there but fewer quilts overall. <br />
<br />
Enjoy the few pictures I took to share with you.<br />

What's a good show with out a bit of Irishness? Below, a black denim is the background with either crochet or tatted lace on it. Up close it looks like Irish lace and from a far. I have several pieces of Carrickmacross lace hand made in Ireland, this quilt, while not as delicate as my lace, but a very good attempt.<br />

Nancy has not heard of Glamping, but she has made a Glamping pillow. Glamorous and camping combined make the new word: glamping. My new favorite magazine, Mary Jane's Farm, has a special section for women that Glamp! Nancy is on her way!<br />

Marcia's Vintage Revival quilt is at the long armer's so she showed us the picture. We definitely want to see the real thing when completed. I do believe one of the modern bloggers designed the pattern and published a book to this name. Marcia's colors are so uplifting.<br />

Adrienne gave us a very informative explanation of fabric that "appears" or "reads" solid versus those fabrics that do not.<br />

These blocks were our homework if we wished to participate in the drawing to win them. All of our blocks that we've made since we started the modern block give away should read solid. While most of all the blocks have been good looking, not all have "read" solid.<br />

She made these beautiful self-binding baby receiving blankets.<br />

Becky directed us to the <a href="https://www.missouriquiltco.com/">Missouri Star Quilt Company</a> and search for self-binding baby receiving blanket. Becky made these three blankets in one day without a lot of stress or time. I believe she indicated that all three blankets were done is about 3 hours. Well, since we have a new baby girl in the neighborhood, I was up to the challenge. Oh, my goodness! I had to double check my angle cut since I'm a lefty and angles and I are not always congruent. Including the sizing and squaring of the two pieces of flannel, my blanket took an hour and fifteen minutes! Thank you, Becky!</div>

I really liked how this flannel even looked like patchwork! The mitered corners were perfect! Yeah! I did wash it before delivering it across the street and the flannel went a bit wonky, but not too bad. Next time perhaps I'll wash the flannel first. </div>

Missouri Star Quilt Company is a must site to bookmark. Jenny Doan does the absolute best videos. I don't really enjoy watching videos on line all that much, but hers are clear, simple and easy to follow. Here's the site for the <a href="http://quiltingtutorials.com/basic-skills-techniques/binding-baby-quilt-receiving-blanket/">blanket</a>. A few posts ago I highlighted the Disappearing Pinwheel from MSQC. Enjoy.</div>
